What Do I Need to Know if I Am Pregnant in College?

Pregnancy and college might not feel like they go together, but many women have experienced this situation.

If you found out you’re pregnant and are wondering how you will continue school during pregnancy, here are some things to know.

1. Your College Can’t Discriminate Against You

Whether you attend a private or public school, your college can’t discriminate against you due to Title IX. This is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on sex, including pregnancy or parental status, in educational programs and activities.

In addition to allowing you to participate in classes, your college must provide you with reasonable and necessary adjustments, such as a larger desk, elevator access, and more frequent trips to the restroom.

Your college also must excuse your absence due to pregnancy or childbirth as long as a doctor says it’s necessary and allow you to return to the same academic and extracurricular status as before you left. You should be given an opportunity to make up any missed work or credits.

Title IX also outlines other details to help you achieve your academic goals regardless of your pregnancy. Know that you can continue school without discrimination.

2. There are Resources Available

Many young women in college are under the impression that if they become pregnant, abortion is the only option that will allow them to continue their education and build a successful life. However, this isn’t true.

While finding yourself pregnant in college, you might be surprised at how much support is available as a student mother, as residences like MiraVia are here to help you throughout college.

Many programs and pregnancy centers are ready to assist you with no-cost services. Research the area around your campus to learn more about the resources available to you and your baby.
