Homework + exams + morning sickness + doctor’s appointments = overwhelmed. We get it. Trying to finish college while pregnant can feel exhausting, to say the least, but there are steps you can take to manage pregnancy and college at the same time—and succeed at both!
This article will highlight practical steps you can take right now if you’re pregnant and in college. However, if you want to learn more or talk to someone in person about your pregnancy and the free resources that are here to help, contact us today.
Talk to Your College Guidance Counselor
Your college is rooting for your academic success, and being transparent about your pregnancy will ensure that your school can provide you with every reasonable accommodation and support service you’re entitled to.
According to Title IX, a federal civil rights law, you’re entitled to the following as a pregnant student:
- Excused absences and the same academic standing when you return
- Reasonable accommodations, like a larger desk, elevator access, more bathroom breaks, etc.
- The option to study at home or receive at-home tutoring services
- Protection from harassment based on your pregnancy status
This list isn’t exhaustive, which is why it’s essential to speak with your college guidance counselor to learn more and put a plan for academic success in place.
Find Meaningful Support
Being pregnant while in college can feel lonely, but finding meaningful connections with people who understand can help you feel supported and encouraged.
At MiraVia, our Outreach Center offers peer support groups, material assistance, life skills classes, and much more to moms in our community.
And if you’re looking for a safe, supportive place to live while in college, we also offer a College Residence Program, where you’ll find the intentional support you need to manage your pregnancy and succeed academically.
Prioritize Self-Care
Pregnancy can come with physical and emotional stress, which is why it’s critical to prioritize your self-care right now.
What do you enjoy most? What brings you peace and makes you feel happiest? Pursue these activities and focus on healthy lifestyle choices, like:
- Eating healthy foods
- Getting enough sleep
- Taking walks or getting light exercise, as recommended by a healthcare professional
