If you are pregnant and in college, you have rights as a college student that are protected by Title IX.

What Rights Are Protected by Title IX?
Finding out you’re pregnant while still in college can feel overwhelming, and you might be worried about how you’ll academically succeed while navigating pregnancy.
The good news is that you have rights as a college student to ensure you have what you need to continue your program successfully.
Title IX is a “Federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex—including pregnancy and parental status—in educational programs and activities.”
According to Title IX, your school must:
- Allow you to participate in your classes and extracurricular activities
- Excuse absences related to pregnancy (like doctor’s appointments, pregnancy sickness, or childbirth)
- Allow you to return to class after an absence with the same academic status (the same grade, etc.)
- Offer homebound instruction (like an online class option)
- Provide reasonable accommodations in class, like a larger desk, elevator access, etc.
This list isn’t exhaustive, so it’s essential to speak with your college counselor and professors to discover your rights as a student.
